WEST VILLAGE TOWNHOUSE
Situated on a historic block in the West Village, this Federal-era townhouse was originally home to a working-class Italian family who arrived in New York City by ship. Over the ensuing years, it was owned by several prominent New Yorkers whose stories were literally and metaphorically built into its walls. Our project included uncovering and restoring some of the original interior details, including brick walls, a cooking hearth, a mirrored playlist, and timber crossties. The rear extension, with its steel and glass window wall, allows light to travel through the house and provides a constant visual connection with the garden. The reclaimed wormy chestnut, pine and oak woodwork, reclaimed Italian marble, and forged steel materials were inspired by the house itself.
