This maisonette, designed by Paul Rudolph in the 1970’s within a building that was designed as a residential hotel in 1920, is an archeological design that includes unearthing the interplay between the pre-war construction and the translucent and reflective planes of Rudolph’s insertions. Both the surgical demolition coupled with the troves of project records have inspired our renovation. In repairing and refurbishing, adding and subtracting, the new design reinvigorates some of what Rudolph set out to do while intertwining a new layer within the already conversant layered history.
