After conducting envisioning workshops with the
students, librarians, and teachers of this elementary school library, the design
emerged from their feedback. The custom modular soft seating forms raft-like sofas
can be pulled apart for individual seating. The reading nest, carved into the
wall, and the reading rotunda provide intimate spaces, while the theater window
is a space for kids to make presentations and perform read-alouds. In the main
reading room, the curvilinear book worm features student selections, and the two-tiered
reference desk allows kids to do their own research. The modular worktables
snake through the space allowing the students to move freely and the librarians
to rearrange the space for various activities.
